How I created my wedding invitations

Embracing the Spirit of Early Autumn

It’s been almost a year since our wedding. As I reflect on that special day, I realise I’ve never shared much about one of my favourite aspects of the planning process - the design! Amid all the wedding preparations and the whirlwind of details, I was so focused on making sure everything went smoothly that I didn’t take the time to highlight one of the most personal parts: creating our wedding invitations and stationery.

Our wedding was planned for early autumn, that beautiful time of year when the air starts to crisp but still holds enough warmth for cozy outdoor gatherings. I envisioned the kind of day where the golden light dances through trees, and you’re surrounded by colourful, falling leaves. It was that special autumn glow that I wanted to capture in the entire look and feel of our wedding, starting with the invitations.

The original plan was to have the ceremony outside, immersed in nature’s golden hues. However, the weather had other plans - it rained a bit the day before, and we had to move the ceremony to a festive tent. But, as if on cue, the sun broke through just after the ceremony, flooding everything with the kind of golden light I’d imagined from the start. Our guests gathered around a bonfire for drinks, and everything came together, exuding a cozy warmth - exactly what I hoped for.

Crafting the Invitations: Cozy, Rustic, and Modern

When it came to the invitations, I knew I wanted something that reflected the coziness of the season but still felt modern and a bit rustic. The feeling I wanted to evoke was intimate yet refined, and I poured that idea into every design choice.

I opted for a hand-crafted, perfectly imperfect font that felt personal and warm. I loved how it added an artisanal, homespun vibe to the invitations, which I carried throughout the rest of our stationery. It wasn’t just about making the text look beautiful; it was about making each piece feel personal, as if it had been crafted by hand for every single guest.

Bringing the Design Together: Stamps, Tags, and Table Numbers

One of the most special elements was the custom stamp I created. I wanted something that could be used not only for the invitations but also for other small touches throughout the wedding. The stamp became the defining element across the board, used on the envelopes as a seal of sorts and on the tiny tags we attached to the tea gifts for our guests.

Speaking of those gifts — I’m a tea lover, and I wanted to share that cozy experience with our guests. I stamped each tag with the same design that appeared on the envelopes, bringing a sense of unity to the overall aesthetic. These little details, I think, are what made everything feel cohesive and thoughtful.

For the table numbers, I continued the theme of the hand-crafted font, paired with simple, elegant illustrations. They had the rustic charm I was going for, but the modern typeface kept it all from feeling too old-fashioned.

The Magic of Golden Hour

Looking back, even though the weather took a turn and the ceremony was moved inside, the atmosphere on the day was perfect. The golden hour light, shining just as everyone stepped outside, created a magical ambiance that tied everything together - from the cozy bonfire to the autumnal invitations.

In the end, designing our own wedding stationery wasn’t just about aesthetics. It was about crafting an experience, setting the tone for one of the most meaningful days. The process of putting our personalities into those designs, and then seeing them come to life on the wedding day, made everything feel all the more special.

I’m so glad I took the time to design everything myself, despite being my own most demanding client. It allowed me to channel all the love, warmth, and cozy vibes I wanted to share with our family and friends, long before they even arrived at the ceremony. And now, nearly a year later, I still smile every time I look at those invitations.
